Fraternities and Sororities

Currently, there are eleven recognized Greek lettered social organizations on campus. All organizations aspire for the betterment of students. However, each organization is original in its make-up, beliefs and traditions. Below is a brief description of SCSU's Sororities and Fraternities.

SORORITIES

Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority (International)

Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority is dedicated to developing women of poise and purpose. Since its founding in 1901 at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, the sorority has grown into a strong organization consisting of more than 150 collegiate and alumnae chapters nationwide.

Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority (International)

Founded in 1917 at the New York University Law School by five women, Delta Phi Epsilon's numbers have reached over 47,000 sisters nationwide. Active at Southern for many years, Delta Phi Epsilon continues to introduce members of the Southern community to the ideals and beliefs to its membership.

Omega Zeta Pi Sorority (Local)

Omega Zeta Pi was introduced to Southern's campus in April of 2004 and was welcomed by Greek Life with open arms. The sisterhood has strengthened each and every semester since its inception and is looking forward to a promising future. Omega Zeta Pi continues to gain momentum as a highly recognizable and respected sorority on campus. Southern is proud to have these women call SCSU home.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. (International)

Zeta Phi Beta was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1920, by five African-American female students. The Sorority was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations - to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. Southern welcomes Zeta Phi Beta as the most recent addition to the Greek family.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. (International)

Sigma Gamma Rho was founded on the campus of Butler University on November 12, 1922, by seven school teachers in Indianapolis, Indiana. It became a national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, at which time a charter was granted and the Alpha chapter was established. This non-profit sorority's aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and the education of youth are the hallmark of the organization's programs and activities.

Lambda Pi Upsilon Sorority Inc. (International)

Founded on November 6, 1992 at SUNY Geneseo by "Six Pillars of Strength."  It is a Latina-oriented sororal organization, which stands for the "Unity of Powerful Latin Women".  Lambda Pi Upsilon satisfies the increasingly sophisticated needs of all women of color through a network of proud, intelligent, innovative women and their actions within the community.  Our service is to our families, our academics, our community an (Internationd above all, each other.  Members are dedicated to cultivating and encouraging distinguished ethical and scholastic standards by following the following principles.

Fraternities

Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity (National)

Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity was founded in 1914 at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, by a group of men with Italian roots. While initially founded as a social society, it evolved into one of the most unique of American college fraternities. It has retained its focus by attracting select men at some of the best colleges and universities in the United States. A majority of Alpha Phi Delta men and Chapters are campus leaders. Alpha Phi Delta experiences has helped many of its nearly 20,000 lifelong members to become top leaders in all facets of life.

Beta Mu Sigma Fraternity (Local)


Beta Mu Sigma fraternity has been a long standing member of the Greek Life community.  Beta Mu Sigma is Southern's oldest fraternal organization which was founded in 1959. In April 2000, Beta Mu Sigma re-invented itself based on the ideals of Respect, Honor, Loyalty, Tradition, Community and Brotherhood.

Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity Inc. (National)

Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity was founded on December 10, 1985 at the University at Buffalo when sixteen men formed a support group to provide a social and cultural outlet for students of Latin American descent. The university's Greek system lacked an organization dedicated to the needs of the Latino community. To meet those needs, the group chose to pursue recognition as the first Latino-oriented Greek-letter organization on campus. The founding fathers represented various ethnic backgrounds, demonstrating the diversity of the Latin American community. The unity realized by these men became the foundation upon which the fraternity was established.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. (International)

Phi Beta Sigma was founded at Howard University in Washington , D.C. in 1914, by three young African-American male students. The founders wanted to organize a Greek fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service.  Southern is proud to be a home to these men.

Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity (International)

Tau Kappa Epsilon was founded in 1899 on the campus of Wesleyan University in Illinois .  With a small starting membership of five gentlemen, the fraternity was developed to aid college men in their development.  Since that time, they have experienced growth into a premier international fraternity.  With chapters and brothers throughout the world, TKE continues to aid men throughout their college experience.
